Re: Uncle Vanya's lineart crap
The lack of tsuba and/or habaki, plus the flushness of the blade with the tsuka would make that katana wildly impractical for use. It'd also be nearly impossible to (or at least, utterly impossible to properly) perform koiguchi no kirikata.

Re: Uncle Vanya's lineart crap
Its like a cross-breed between a katana and a cossack shashka, also I was lazy, and more concentrated on the armor.

Re: Uncle Vanya's lineart crap
Take into account the curvature of the shashka's hilt and its pommel design, then - those provide for the draw. Of course, at that point, it might as well as just be a longer, more cumbersome shashka.
I still don't see any sane katana techniques being applied with this weapon, though - the katana and the sabre (esp. the cavalry sabre) have very different applications.

As I said, I didn't go that deep into it, it was just a quick drawing to compliment the armor. But since we're getting into this, shashka isn't your typical saber either, unlike other european sabers, shashka evolved from knives, not swords. And all weapons have the same application, as in, killing people.

First off, that statement is patently wrong. Weapons aren't used for killing people, they're used for killing.
Second off, That's like equivocating a Beretta F92 with a Barret M82A2. Yes, they're both used in killing, but their applications are entirely different. I wouldn't deploy a handgun for a mile-long shot and I wouldn't deploy an antimateriel rifle as a close-quarters backup.
"Application" as in "method of use", not "raison d'être".
Show me a man using a katana on horseback and I'll show you either a weaponmaster and a genius, or an idiot who has never been properly trained.

I can show you a man who used shashka on foot, if that helps.

and a woman:

starts out with a nagaika, but there is shashka in there after a few seconds.
Point being that you can use a beretta and a TT pistol at close quarters to similar results.

Re: Uncle Vanya's lineart crap
My example was WRT a katana on horseback, not a shashka on foot. Sabres were designed with idea that, at some point, the wielder was not going to be on their horse; not so much the katana.

Well the katana was made for dueling. The yari was much more commonly wielded in a battle involving cavalry.

Re: Uncle Vanya's lineart crap
Ok seriously, all the guy did was post some line art. And all you guys can do is nit pick and pull it apart.
Shouldn't your energy be best used in, I don't know.....Posting in your respective threads instead of trying to prove who knows more about swords than the other.
On top of that, it turned from him sharing his line art, to you hijacking his thread about your supposed "knowledge" in weaponry....

Re: Uncle Vanya's lineart crap
If you don't want your art to get criticized, keep it to yourself. Further: criticism should lead to the artist considering the criticism and improving themselves based on it (assuming the criticism is any good).Kraven Shadow wrote:Ok seriously, all the guy did was post some line art. Also, in case you didn't see the debate UncleVanya and I had re: whether or not Dragon Age Origins had a sensible, good plot (you may not have joined the forums when it happened, I don't remember)... well, our friendly debates get a lot more intense than this. (I haven't even sworn once. Yet.)
I've already posted in my one thread.Kraven Shadow wrote:Shouldn't your energy be best used in, I don't know.....Posting in your respective threads instead of trying to prove who knows more about swords than the other.
Nah brah nah, I pointed out an issue with one of his weapons using the respective terminology for the weapon. If you think that's an e-peen contest... well, okay, you're allowed to think what you want.Kraven Shadow wrote:On top of that, it turned from him sharing his line art, to you hijacking his thread about your supposed "knowledge" in weaponry....

Re: Uncle Vanya's lineart crap
Okay, now the thread is getting a bit derailed. Lets either talk about things related to the artwork, or not talk.

And we all admire your powers of self-restraint.
As for the art, did you say you do these in paint? God, I can't draw a stick figure in paint . . .

Re: Uncle Vanya's lineart crap
Wanted to make something more complex and detailed but for some reason this simplistic version just ended up looking the coolest. Its an emblem for a certain organization that I'm at this point planning to start in our DA RP.

That's no dagger, that's a damn meat cleaver.

PS. It helps to have a scale. I thought that was a reaver daiklave at first...

Re: Uncle Vanya's lineart crap
Volk's longsword.
A scale would be nice but it'd add to stuff I would need to do, and Im lazy. Use your imagination.

The fact that he said it was a dagger clued me into its size, lol. These are awesome, and your latest is my favourite. On a random note, where did you get your faces -- aside from the latest two, as I can tell those are from The Witcher.

Made them in Fallout 3 (which is the only game with a face creator I have for PC atm) and took a screenshot.

Re: Uncle Vanya's lineart crap
EVE Online has an awesome character creator now. I advocate just grabbing a 14-day free trial and making an asston of faces/characters.
